Gayle Wald is a well-known scholar of African American music and American culture who teaches at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship as well as two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities. SHOUT SISTER SHOUT! was a New York Times Book Review "Editor's Choice" after its publication pick in Spring 2007. It was also the basis of director Mick Csaky's documentary "Godmother of Rock", which received warm reviews when it was aired on the BBC (in 2011) and on "American Masters" on PBS (in 2013).
